Working with the Urban Poor
Campaign and Advocacy – Working with the Urban Poor
Campaign and Advocacy started with the aim of addressing issues of the urban poor by facilitating their collectivization and capacity enhancement. We first began our journey with the hand-rickshaw pullers and the urban homeless.
With hand rickshaw-pullers in Kolkata we focused on their health issues and their right to compensation and rehabilitation in the face of the imposed ban from the state government. We partnered with Action Aid and network organizations to highlight citizenship and housing rights of the millions of urban homeless.
The programme is pivoted upon three strategies:
1. Mobilization of the margnalized
2. Campaigning and communication of their rights
3. Advocacy with policy level stakeholders to ensure access of services for the marginalized
Over the years, we have partnered with CRY and OAK Foundation on issues ranging from Child Rights, Child Development, Rights of the Urban Poor and Violence against Women.
At the present moment, we are working with Action Aid on a project called Young Urban Women, which creates awareness on issues pertaining to the economic independence and reproductive health of young women in Kolkata.
